Community GROUPS

KRC’s work with Local Community Groups (LCGs) is supported under Goal 1 of the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022.  Goal 1 is to support communities and target groups to engage with relevant stakeholders in identifying and addressing social exclusion and equality issues, developing the capacity of Local Community Groups, and creating more sustainable communities.  KRC supports 11 LCGs including the Tipperary Resident’s Network, Tipperary Men’s Shed, Tipperary Feminist Network, Lone Parent’s Group and Parent & Toddlers Group.

Work carried out in support of LCGs promotes stronger community engagement and stronger communities.  It contributes to an increased sense of community within the relevant area or community of interest.  Using community development, bottom-up approaches we provide direct supports to local communities while also developing the capacity of LCGs which represent or work within disadvantaged communities and target groups.

community education

Community education is adult learning which takes place in local community setting like KRC across the county. It is learner-centred and responds to the needs of the local community. Community Education is non-formal in nature offering short, part-time courses and programmes, and can therefore act as a first positive step back to education. It leads to many possibilities for learners and communities, including skills development, confidence building, greater community involvement and progression to further education or employment. KRC community education groups presently include a Strollers Group, a variety of Women’s Groups, an Art Group, a Traveller Women’s Cookery Group and Failte Isteach. Failte Isteach is a community project involving predominantly older volunteers welcoming migrants through conversational English classes. The project provides the necessary language skills to new migrants in a student-centred, welcoming and inclusive manner while involving older volunteers and recognising their skills, expertise and contribution to the community.

organic garden

For 20 years KRC has dedicated itself to the upkeep of one of the best examples of a town-centred certified Organic Garden. The garden hosts a Community Allotment Programme which is available, with organic horticulture training, to members of disadvantaged communities in the surrounding area. The Garden is used by a number of community, social and horticulture groups and for adult education and training purposes. It is only with the wonderful contribution of Volunteers that the garden continues to thrive and has become the jewel of Knockanrawley Resource Centre and a haven of peace and beauty with Tipperary Town.
